Australian chain Pie Face comes to Singapore
Leading Australian pie and coffee chain Pie Face has arrived in Singapore—despite the hoo-ha around the closure of six of its seven New York outlets last month—with their first outlet at 313@Somerset, and a 1,400 square-foot flagship opening soon at Bugis Village.
Following a winning recipe by French pastry chef Francois Galand—where the dough takes three days to prepare and is folded with a unique blend of butter till 48 layers—the consistent light pie pastry is crisp, flaky and actually quite delicious.
The filling—differentiated by the various cheeky expressions on the crust—however, left much to be desired. The Thai Chicken Curry Pie ($4.90) lacked complexity and that oomph of Asian spices, Chicken Peppercorn peppery and flat, and the Mini Lemon Pie ($3.30) too sweet for my taste.
Then again, we visited during their soft launch period and we hear the kitchen has been tweaking recipes. That being said, I enjoyed the savoury Cheesestick ($1.90) that’s slightly ‘bready' on the inside with a potent cheese flavour.
Pie Face also serves up a selection of cookies, cakes, hot soups and quality coffee.
