T.G.I. Tuesday at SPRMRKT
Located within the trendy Telok Ayer neighbourhood, 2-year old SPRMRKT returns after a brief revamp with a new retail nook, an overhauled menu and extended operating hours — they're now open for dinner.
Despite being a stone's throw from Amoy Street Food Centre and other eateries, the art space-cum-bistro-cum-supermarket concept remains extremely popular during lunch, especially closer to the weekends, and it's not hard to understand why.
Service is brisk and energetic; the coffee, decent; and the menu changes daily so even die-hard regulars can have something different every day — though I am more excited for some days over others.
Highlights include the tasty Parma Ham Risotto ($20), prepared with a mix of button and shimeji mushrooms for added texture, and the Fried Lotus Root & Parma Ham Salad ($13, both available Tuesdays only) teamed with roasted shallots, crisp tapioca chips and a piquant vinegar and ponzu dressing.
Also delicious is the savoury Bacon Pudding ($16) under the All-Day Breakfast menu that's available daily. Imagine bacon-studded, pillowy bread pudding, crowned with poached eggs and a rich and buttery hollandaise cape.
I'm not one to praise truffle fries, but I did enjoy SPRMRKT's rendition ($12) with generous dashes of kelp bits and parmesan. Perfect for picking at with their variety of interesting, homemade real fruit sodas.
However, it seems not every day is as delicious as Tuesday; we returned on a busy Friday and the dishes were rather lacklustre. The Grilled Chicken Wrap ($10) was slightly under-seasoned, and the beef balls in the Spaghetti Bolognaise ($20) were mushy and seemingly undercooked. That being said, the Bacon Pudding we ordered on Friday was still just as enjoyable.
