More Than Just A Quick FIX
Overlooking the pool at HomeTeam NS - JOM Clubhouse, cheery (and soon-to-be Halal-certified) FIX Cafe is the new go-to enclave to while the afternoon away, what with their pretty decent grub, bevy of good-lookers and spirited staff—sometimes a combination of both—and the occasional hot bod.
By the same owners of Cookyn Inc and GRUB in Bishan Park, wallet-friendly FIX shies away from the repetitive band of hipster cafés with a concise menu that focuses on handmade, casual bites. Everything at the workshop-inspired cafe is handmade as far as possible, from the food to the one-of-a-kind furniture.
Highlights of their affordable lineup ($14 can get you a set meal of main and starter, or $12 for main and drink) though remains the winning series of home-baked pastries and cakes by talented pastry chef Michael Liu.
My favourite is the pillowy light Coconut Chiffon ($7), balanced with delicate notes of tropical passionfruit and mango. Also worth repeat visits are the Strawberry Pistachio Rose Tart ($6) and the Butterscotch Arabica Choux ($6) with a surprise caramel center.
Those who want something more substantial can go for their interesting, open-faced Naanwiches ($10 each, comes with side of Nachos)—we recommend the Beef & Kimchi, the poached egg pulling the flavours together—or the Chicken Tikka Salad ($7) topped with creamy feta and almond. With flavours so robust and authentic, the flavoursome chunks of chicken almost had us fooled into thinking there was an Indian uncle in the kitchen—there wasn't, we asked.
FIX Cafe is also a corporate social responsibility-driven project that aims to give youth at risk another chance. They have currently employed youth at risk who work as bakers and baristas at the cafe.
